Peleliu: Guernica of Paradise

Set against the harrowing backdrop of World War II, Peleliu: Guernica of Paradise chronicles the daily existence of Japanese soldiers entrenched in the Battle of Peleliu. This brutal, months-long campaign exacts a devastating toll on the defenders stationed on the remote island outpost. Amid the relentless tension and mounting casualties, the narrative intimately explores how these men navigate their grim reality while awaiting an inevitable confrontation with the enemy. At the center of the story is Tamaru, a young soldier whose mind remains tethered to a dream far removed from the battlefield. He aspires to return home after the war and pursue a career as a manga artist. Rather than succumbing entirely to despair, Tamaru views the lush, untamed landscape of his island garrison as a wild paradise, imagining it as the perfect setting for a future story he hopes to one day illustrate. His creative vision serves as both an escape and a lifeline. However, Tamaru’s hopeful perspective stands in stark contrast to the mindset of those around him. The majority of his comrades harbor no such illusions about survival. Fully aware of the overwhelming odds stacked against them, they have quietly accepted a far more realistic and tragic fate—that none of them will ever leave Peleliu alive.
