In the Pursuit of Paradise

When a young comedian passes away, he leaves behind his wife, Kyoko, and their infant daughter, who is not yet a year old. In the wake of this devastating loss, his older brother, Shouji, steps forward to support the grieving family. Choosing to live together under one roof, Shouji dedicates himself to caring for Kyoko and the child as they attempt to navigate an uncertain future without the man who connected them. However, Shouji carries a heavy burden of his own, struggling with two extreme psychological states: mania and depression. Trapped in a grueling cycle of eating, working, sleeping, and waking, the three find that a conventional life remains entirely out of reach. Despite these overwhelming obstacles, they continuously reach toward a shared will to survive, clinging to one another through their darkest moments. In the Pursuit of Paradise is a deeply personal stepfamily story crafted by an author who lives with bipolar disorder. Through raw honesty and emotional depth, the manga explores the fragile boundaries between grief, mental illness, and the enduring human desire to keep living when ordinary happiness feels impossible.
