Set within the walls of Genbu Shobou publishing company, the story centers on Araki, a veteran editor in the dictionary department who is nearing retirement. Faced with the inevitable end of his career, he begins searching for a capable successor to carry on his life's work. The search takes an unexpected turn when he overhears a conversation between two very different employees: Mitsuya Majime, a socially awkward salesman who struggles to articulate his thoughts, and Masashi Nishioka, Araki’s own gregarious and somewhat frivolous coworker. Intrigued by what he hears, Araki makes the unconventional decision to recruit the tongue-tied Majime into the dictionary department. This choice sets the stage for an unlikely professional partnership between two deeply contrasting individuals. Together, these awkward yet dedicated men must navigate the meticulous and demanding world of lexicography. Their shared mission is the compilation of a new medium-sized Japanese dictionary titled "The Great Passage" (Daitokai). As they labor over definitions and words, the narrative explores how their distinct personalities complement one another in the quiet pursuit of creating something enduring, transforming a routine editorial assignment into a profound journey of language and human connection.
