Brother

During his childhood, the young narrator watches as his older brother becomes deeply consumed by "Gyaru-o," a distinctive Japanese youth subculture that emerged in the 1990s. This movement was defined by teenage boys who adopted highly stylized, unconventional fashion and grooming habits, setting themselves apart from mainstream society. As his brother fully embraces this eccentric lifestyle, his increasingly unusual appearance leaves the younger sibling both bewildered and intensely curious about what drives such a dramatic personal transformation. Unable to understand the sudden change in his older brother, the boy's fascination eventually compels him to take matters into his own hands. Driven by a mixture of confusion and a desperate desire to uncover the truth, he begins sneaking into his brother's private room whenever the opportunity arises. In these quiet, secretive moments, he searches for hidden clues that might explain the mysterious world his brother has chosen to inhabit, hoping to bridge the growing emotional distance between them through whatever secrets he can find. Brother is an animated short film produced in 2021 as a first-year project at the Tokyo University of the Arts, Graduate School of Film and New Media, Department of Animation.
