Semi-Eternal Happy End

Seventeen-year-old Nanako Kobayashi is an unattractive girl who appears utterly indifferent to the world around her. One day, she receives a phone call that forces her to make a binary choice in response to a single question. At that moment, a demon suddenly materializes before her—taking the guise of her beloved teddy bear. The creature offers to grant her three wishes, each presented as a selection between two distinct options. Which choices will Nanako ultimately make? As an ancient Chinese proverb from the 3rd century B.C. poses: "Once upon a time I dreamed I was a butterfly, fluttering hither and thither, to all intents and purposes a butterfly. I was conscious only of following my fancies as a butterfly, and was unconscious of my individuality as a man. Suddenly I woke, and there I lay, myself again. Now I do not know whether I was then a man dreaming I was a butterfly, or whether I am now a butterfly dreaming I am a man."
