In the first year of the Shao Sheng era of the Northern Song dynasty, Zhao Xiaojian, the young prince of the Chu Kingdom, stepped out of the palace gates and found that the city of Bianjing seemed to have changed overnight. The Liao and Western Xia dynasties were casting covetous eyes on the Central Plains, while the old and new factions within the imperial court were locked in a bitter struggle for power. As a member of the royal family, Zhao Xiaojian felt powerless to intervene. He watched the corrupt and chaotic state of the court unfold before him, shaking his head in dismay. The celebrated painter Zhang Zeduan was threatening to leave Zhao out of his masterpiece, *Along the River During the Qingming Festival*.
