5 Centimeters per Second: One More Side

5 Centimeters per Second: One More Side is a light novel adaptation and retelling of Makoto Shinkai's acclaimed animated film 5 Centimeters per Second. It revisits the original story while opening up its emotional interiors, giving voice to thoughts, viewpoints, and moments that remained unseen in the film. Across three interconnected stages of their lives, the novel follows Takaki Toono, Akari Shinohara, and Kanae Sumida. Their experiences are woven together by distance, memory, and the quiet passage of time, as each character confronts the gap between what was felt and what could be said. The narrative shifts among their perspectives, deepening the original tale without altering its course. By exploring the private reflections and untold events that surround the three segments, One More Side offers a fuller portrait of longing, separation, and the lingering pull of the past. It is both a companion to the film and a standalone expansion that illuminates the inner lives of its central figures.
