Fonons form the fundamental building blocks of all matter on the planet Auldrant. Ages ago, the discovery of a previously unknown variety—the Seventh Fonon—plunged civilization into turmoil, as its use granted the ability to foresee the future. Bitter wars erupted across the continents over control of this power, and they ceased only when the miasma, a toxic emission from the planet's core, blanketed the world. It was then that Yulia appeared. A prophetic fonist, she gazed millennia into the future and discerned a method to contain the miasma. Guided by her visions, humanity s쳮ded in sealing the poison deep within the planet. More than two thousand years have since passed. The world now operates under Yulia's prophetic teachings, known as the Score. The people place unwavering faith in the coming "unprecedented prosperity" foretold by the Score, never deviating from the path it lays out for them. They revere the revelations of the Score as interpreted by the Order of Lorelei, the religious institution Yulia established, and hold steadfast adherence to its tenets as the highest virtue. The Score speaks of a young man essential to realizing this promised prosperity: Luke fon Fabre. Heir to the throne of the Kingdom of Kimlasca-Lanvaldear, Luke was abducted in childhood by the rival Malkuth Empire. Since his safe return, he has remained confined within his family's manor for his own protection—entirely unaware of the encroaching menace that now threatens him.
