In the first year of the Jingchang era, Emperor Taizu was enjoying a spring banquet in the palace gardens when he suddenly asked his consorts, "Am I greater or lesser than Liu Bang, the founding emperor of the Han dynasty?" The concubines replied in unison, "Your Majesty is naturally far superior." Delighted, the emperor pressed them for their reasoning. One consort answered with a smile, "Liu Bang had many women in his harem, while Your Majesty has even more. By this measure alone, you surely surpass him." Her words sent ripples of laughter through the garden. The emperor choked on his wine and flushed with indignation. "Liu Bang was merely a village head at the end of the Qin dynasty who won the empire by defeating a single rival, Xiang Yu," he declared angrily. "I was but a humble hamlet chief at the end of the Ming, yet I swept away both the domestic bandits within the passes and the foreign invaders beyond them. I united the realm nine times over—surely my achievements are more than double those of the Han founder!" The consort remained composed, adjusting her sleeves as she replied gently, "This humble one has read few books and knows little of history or Liu Bang’s strengths. But as a woman, I know with certainty that Your Majesty is indeed the stronger man." As the Ming dynasty collapsed under the weight of chaos, roaming rebel armies ravaged the land and foreign cavalry threatened the borders. From this turmoil rose an obscure minor official with neither power nor influence, commanding nothing more than a single hamlet. Relying solely on his understanding of human nature, strategic calculation, and willingness to fight to the death, he seized a county seat, expanded to control an entire prefecture, and ultimately swept across the nation to restore order and revive the glory of the Han people.
