Chapter 92
But to resume—the Great Sage Sun, with his two younger brothers, rode the wind and mounted the clouds, heading toward the northeastern quarter marked by the Gen trigram. In an instant they reached the mouth of Xuanying Cave on Green Dragon Mountain. They lowered their cloud and alighted, whereupon Bajie was about to smash the gate. Pilgrim said, "Wait a moment. Let me first go in and see whether the Master is alive or dead, then we can fight them." Sha Monk said, "The gate is shut tight—how can you get in?" Pilgrim said, "I have magic powers."
The splendid Great Sage put away his cudgel, formed a mudra with his fingers, recited the spell, and cried, "Change!" He at once turned into a firefly—truly nimble and quick. Look at him:
His wings spread, starlight gleaming,
As the old saying goes: rotten grass turns into fireflies.
His supernatural powers and transformations are not to be taken lightly,
For he possesses a nature given to hovering.
Flying close to the stone gate, he peered;
By the cracks at the side, wind passed through.
With one leap he was inside the secluded courtyard,
To spy out the movements of the demons.
He flew in and saw several oxen sprawled every which way, each snoring like thunder, all fast asleep. Reaching the central hall, there was no sign at all. All the doors and passages were open, but he did not know where the three demon-spirits were sleeping. He had just turned past the hall and shone his light toward the rear when he heard the sound of weeping—it was Tang Sanzang, chained to a pillar under the eaves of the back room, crying. Pilgrim listened closely to what he was crying. He heard him say:
"Parted from Chang'an ten-some years,
Over mountains and waters I've suffered and toiled.
Fortunate to reach the Western Regions at the fair season,
Glad to come to Jīnping to greet the Lantern Feast.
I did not recognize the false Buddha images in the lamps,
All because fate had laid misfortunes upon me.
My worthy disciples pursue and strike with martial might,
But I pray that heroes may wield their great authority."
When Pilgrim heard this, his heart was filled with joy. He spread his wings and flew close to the Master. Tang Sanzang wiped his tears and said, "Ah! The scenery in the West is different. In the first month now, the hibernating insects are just beginning to stir—how can there already be fireflies flying?" Pilgrim could not contain himself and called out, "Master, I am here." Tang Sanzang said happily, "Wukong, I was wondering how there could be fireflies in the first month—so it is you." Pilgrim immediately revealed his original form and said, "Master, because you did not tell true from false, how many miles have we gone astray, how much effort have we wasted! The moment I said those were not good people, you bowed down to them, only to be mocked by these monsters who darkened the lamps, stole the fine-flavored sesame oil, and even carried you off here. I instructed Bajie and Sha Monk to return to the monastery and keep watch, while I followed the wind and traced them to this place, though I did not know the name of the land. Fortunately I met the Four Duty Gods who reported that this mountain is called Green Dragon Mountain and this cave Xuanying Cave. In the daytime I fought with these monsters until dusk before returning, and I told my younger brothers all about it. I never went to sleep, and came here with both of them. I feared that in the deep of night it would be inconvenient to do battle, and I did not know where you were, so I transformed and came in to investigate." Tang Sanzang said happily, "Are Bajie and Sha Monk outside now?" Pilgrim said, "They are outside. Just now when Old Sun looked around, the demons were all asleep. Let me now undo your lock, break open the door, and take you out." Tang Sanzang nodded and thanked him.
Pilgrim performed a lock-releasing method. With a wave of his hand, the lock came open at once. He led the Master out the front way, when suddenly they heard the demon king calling from the inner chamber of the central hall: "My little ones, close the doors tightly and be careful with the fires and candles. Why is it that no one is calling the watches or sounding the clappers and bells?" It turned out that the swarm of lesser demons, having fought all day, were all exhausted and sound asleep. When they heard the call, they woke up; where the clappers and bells sounded, several of them carrying weapons beat gongs and walked out from the rear. By sheer chance they collided with the Master and his disciple. All the lesser demons cried out together, "Fine monk! You forced the lock—where are you going?" Pilgrim gave them no chance to explain. He whipped out his cudgel, shook it until it was the thickness of a bowl, and struck. Where the cudgel rose, two were killed. The rest threw down their weapons and rushed to the central hall, beating on the doors and shouting, "Great King, bad news, bad news! The hairy-faced monk is inside the house, killing people!" When the three monsters heard this, they scrambled to their feet in one heave and cried only, "Seize him, seize him!" So terrified was Tang Sanzang that his hands and feet went limp. Pilgrim paid no heed to the Master; with a single succession of cudgel strokes he rolled forward. The horde of lesser demons could not stand against him; he felled three or four of them and toppled another two or three. Smashing through several layers of gates, he shot straight out and called, "Where are my brothers?" Bajie and Sha Monk were standing ready with their rake and staff, and asked, "Elder Brother, what happened?" Pilgrim told them how he had transformed, gone inside, and freed the Master, but while they were walking out, the demons had taken alarm, so he had been unable to attend to the Master and had fought his way out—but no more of that for now.
The demon king seized Tang Sanzang again and bound him with iron chains as before. Then, with swords in hand and axes hefted, and all the lamps blazing bright, he demanded, "How did you rascal open the lock? How did that monkey get in? Tell me at once, and I will spare your life; otherwise, you shall be sliced in two." The terrified Tang Sanzang fell to his knees trembling and said, "O Great King Grandfather, my disciple Sun Wukong knows the seventy-two transformations. Just now he turned into a firefly and flew in to rescue me. Unforeseen by the Great King, my little kings caught sight of us. My disciple, not knowing what was proper, wounded two of them, whereupon all shouted and raised arms and torches, so he could not concern himself with me and fled outside." The three demon kings laughed heartily and said, "It was good that we were alerted—he has not gotten away." They ordered the little ones to shut the front and rear gates firmly, and to make no clamor.
Sha Monk said, "They shut the gates and make no noise—they must be secretly doing something to our Master. Let us attack." Pilgrim said, "Right. Let us smash the gate at once." That blockhead displayed his powers, raised his rake, and struck with all his might, smashing the stone gate to pieces. Then he shouted in a fierce voice, "Thieves of stolen oil! Send my Master out at once!" The lesser demons inside the gate, terrified, rolled in to report, "Great King, bad news, bad news! The front gate has been broken by the monk." The three demon kings were extremely vexed and said, "This creature is utterly insolent." They ordered their armor to be brought and donned it, each taking up his weapon, and led the lesser demons out the gate to meet the enemy. It was then about the third watch, and the moon in mid-sky shone as bright as day. They came out and, without a word, set to with their weapons. Here Pilgrim held off the battle-axe, Bajie fought the great saber, and Sha Monk faced the huge staff. That was a fine battle:
The three monks, with staff, rake, and cudgel,
Faced the three demons whose courage swelled.
Battle-axe, steel saber, and rattan-wrapped rod—
Only wind and dust were heard in the air.
At the first exchanges they spat out gloomy mist,
Then in their soaring they scattered rosy clouds.
The nail-rake whirled with skillful turns around the body,
The iron cudgel's prowess was even more to be praised.
The demon-subduing treasure staff is rare in the world,
But the demons' stubborn hearts would not give ground.
The battle-axe gleamed with a bright, sharp point,
The rattan staff, knotted and banded, was adorned all over.
The great saber flashed like a door panel,
Yet the monks' magical powers matched them still.
On this side, for the Master's life they fought with fury,
On that side, they would not release Tang Sanzang but struck at his face.
Axe against cudgel—who would win or lose?
Rake against saber—the two clashed and crossed.
The rattan staff struck against the monster-subduing staff,
Over and over they contended in splendid display.
The three monks and three fiends fought for a long time, with no victory or defeat seen. That Great King Repelling-Cold shouted, calling out: "Little ones, come up!" The various spirits each held their weapons and rushed forward together, and before long they tripped Bajie and threw him to the ground. Seized and pulled about by several water buffalo spirits, he was dragged into the cave and bound. Seeing that Bajie was gone and only hearing that crowd of oxen shouting and bellowing, Wukong immediately pulled out his precious staff, made a false stance toward Great King Repelling-Dust as if he wanted to leave, but was again swarmed by the crowd of spirits. Dragged into a stumble and struggling urgently so that he could not rise, he too was captured and bound. The Monkey King felt it was difficult to manage, so he somersaulted on a cloud, freed himself, and departed. At that moment, Bajie and Wukong were dragged before Tang Seng. When Tang Seng saw them, his eyes streamed with tears as he said, "Pity that the two of you also met with poisoned hands. Where is Wukong?" Wukong said, "When Elder Brother saw us captured, he just left." Tang Seng said, "Since he has left, he will certainly go somewhere to seek rescue. But how can we know which day we shall escape the net?" The master and disciples were grief-stricken and miserable, which need not be told further.
Now speaking of the Monkey King, who rode his somersault cloud back to Ciyun Temple. The temple monks greeted him and came to ask: "Was the elder rescued or not?" Wukong said, "Difficult to rescue, difficult to rescue. Those demons possess vast divine powers. We three brothers fought with them for a long time, and they called upon little goblins to first capture Bajie, and later capture Sha Seng. Old Sun was fortunate to escape." The monks said in fright, "Grandpa, you who are so skilled at soaring on clouds and riding the mists, still could not capture them; I suppose the master has been harmed." Wukong said, "No matter, no matter. My master naturally has gods such as the Jialan, the Jiedi, and the Dingjia protecting him in secret, and moreover he once ate the Herb of Immortality, so I reckon his life is not in danger. It is just that the fiends have ability; you all should properly look after the horses and luggage while Old Sun goes up to Heaven to seek reinforcements." The monks said timidly, "Grandpa can still go up to Heaven?" Wukong laughed and said, "The Heavenly Palace was originally my old home. Back in the year when I made trouble at the Flat Peach Banquet, I was subdued by our Buddha. Now, with no other choice, I am protecting Tang Seng on the scripture-seeking journey to redeem my merits through service, assisting the righteous and eliminating the wicked along every step of the road. My master is fated to have this trial, which you all did not know." When the monks heard these words, they again kowtowed and paid reverence. Wukong went out the door, gave a whistle, and instantly vanished.
Fine Great Sage, he quickly arrived outside the Western Gate of Heaven. Suddenly he saw Taibai Jinxing speaking with the Heavenly King Zengzhang and the four great spiritual officials Yin, Zhu, Tao, and Xu. Seeing Wukong arrive, they all hurriedly paid respects and said, "Where is the Great Sage going?" Wukong said, "Because I am protecting Tang Seng as we travel to the eastern borders of the Tianzhu Kingdom, in the Jinping Prefecture's Mintian County, my master was detained by the monks of the local Ciyun Temple to enjoy the Lantern Festival. When we reached the Golden Lantern Bridge, there were three golden lanterns, and the oil used for lighting was Suhe-fragrant oil, priced at over fifty thousand liang of fine gold, which every year receives auspicious blessings from the various Buddhas to be used. While we were looking at them, three Buddha statues truly descended. My master did not know good from bad, and upon stepping onto the bridge he bowed. I said they were no good people, and he was promptly swept away by them in a gust of wind amidst dimmed lantern light, along with the oil and my master. I pursued them following the wind until dawn, arriving at a mountain. Fortunately, the Four Duty Officers reported: that mountain is named Green Dragon Mountain, and on the mountain is the Profound Brightness Cave. In the cave are three fiends, named Great King Repelling-Cold, Great King Repelling-Heat, and Great King Repelling-Dust. Old Sun hastily went to their door to demand [our master back], and fought a round with them in a wager, without winning. I transformed and entered inside, seeing my master locked up and uninjured, and immediately untied him to leave, but I was perceived by them again, whereupon I fled. Afterward, I fought bitterly alongside Bajie and Sha Seng, and they again captured both of them and bound them. Old Sun therefore specifically petitions the Jade Emperor to investigate their origins and request that heavenly generals be sent to subjugate them." Jinxing chuckled coldly and said, "Since the Great Sage has clashed with the monsters, could you not tell their origins?" Wukong said, "I recognized them, I recognized them; they are a pack of ox spirits. It is just that they possess great divine powers and cannot be subdued in haste." Jinxing said, "Those are three rhinoceros spirits. Because they possess astronomical phenomena, through cumulative years of cultivation they have attained the Way, and are also able to fly on clouds and tread the mists. These fiends are extremely fond of cleanliness, often resenting their own shadows, and frequently wish to descend into the water to bathe. Their names and varieties are also many: there are water rhinoceros, male rhinoceros, solitary rhinoceros, speckled rhinoceros, and also the Huma rhinoceros, Duoluo rhinoceros, and Tongtian flowered-pattern rhinoceros. They all have one hole, three hairs, and two horns, and walking within rivers and seas, they can open water channels. As for those Repelling-Cold, Repelling-Heat, and Repelling-Dust, their horns all possess noble aura, and therefore they use this for their names and style themselves great kings. If you wish to capture them, only the Four Wood Astral Stars will make them submit upon meeting." Wukong hastily made a bow with his hands folded and asked, "Which are those Four Wood Astral Stars? I trouble Elder Changgeng to clearly instruct me, clearly instruct me." Jinxing smiled and said, "These stars are outside the Douniu Palace, arrayed across the cosmos. You go and report this to the Jade Emperor, and the distinction will become clear." Wukong cupped his hands in thanks and went straight inside the Heavenly Gate.
Before long, he arrived below the Tongming Hall, first seeing the Four Heavenly Masters Ge, Qiu, Zhang, and Xu. The Heavenly Masters asked, "Where are you going?" Wukong said, "Having recently traveled to the region of Jinping Prefecture, because my master broadened his Chan nature and viewed the lanterns on the Lantern Festival, he was seized by demons. Old Sun cannot subdue them, and specifically come to report to the Jade Emperor to seek rescue." The Four Heavenly Masters then led Wukong to the Hall of Miraculous Mist to present a memorial. After each had finished their greetings, they detailed the matter fully. The Jade Emperor issued an imperial decree: "Instructed to summon which road of heavenly soldiers to assist?" Wukong reported: "Old Sun just arrived at the Western Gate of Heaven and met Elder Changgeng, who said that those monsters are rhinoceros turned spirits, and only the Four Wood Astral Stars can subdue them." The Jade Emperor immediately dispatched Heavenly Master Xu to accompany the Wukong to the Douniu Palace to summon the Four Wood Astral Stars to descend to the mortal realm to capture and subdue them.
When they reached outside the palace, the twenty-eight constellations had already come to welcome them. The Heavenly Master said, "I have received the Holy Decree instructing us to summon the Four Wood Astral Stars to descend to the mortal realm with Sun Wukong to subjugate fiends." Beside them, Horn-Wood Jiao, Dipper-Wood Xie, Kui-Wood Wolf, and Well-Wood Han immediately stepped forth and called out, "Great Sage Sun, for what place are you summoning us to subjugate fiends?" Wukong smiled and said, "So it is you. That old fellow Changgeng was indeed secretive, and I did not understand his meaning. Had he said earlier that it was the Four Wood from among the twenty-eight constellations, Old Sun would have come directly to invite you, so why was there any need to trouble an imperial decree?" The Four Woods said, "What kind of words is the Great Sage speaking? If we do not receive the imperial decree, who would dare to arbitrarily depart? Which region is it precisely? Let us go quickly." Wukong said, "It is in the northeast Gen direction of Jinping Prefecture, at the Profound Brightness Cave on Green Dragon Mountain, where rhinoceroses have turned into spirits." Dipper-Wood Xie, Kui-Wood Wolf, and Horn-Wood Jiao said, "If they are truly rhinoceroses turned spirits, we are not needed; we only require the Well Constellation to go, for he is able to ascend mountains to eat tigers and descend into seas to capture rhinoceroses." Wukong said, "Those rhinoceroses are not like the moon-gazing rhinoceros; these have cultivated and attained the Way, and all have a lifespan of a thousand years. It requires the four of you to go together so that it will be proper; do not push each other off or decline. If by chance one person cannot hold them for a moment, would it not cause trouble all over again?" The Heavenly Master said, "What kind of talk is this from you four? The imperial decree is addressed to the four of you, how can you not go? Take flight at the earliest. I am returning to report the decree." That Heavenly Master thereupon took leave of Wukong and departed.
The Four Wood [Constellations] said, "Great Sage need not hesitate. You go first to issue the challenge and lure them out; we will strike shortly after."
The Pilgrim immediately stepped forward and scolded, "Oil-stealing thief monsters! Return our master!"
Originally, that gate had been battered down by Bajie, and a few little demons had patched it up with a few planks. Hearing the abuses from inside, they hurriedly ran in to report, "Great King, the Monkey Sun is outside cursing!"
Bichen said, "He went off defeated; how is it he comes again today? He must have sought out some reinforcements from somewhere."
Bihan and Bushu said, "What reinforcements is there to fear? Quickly bring the armor and weapons! Little ones, all of you must be attentive and surround them; do not let him get away."
That gang of fiends, not knowing whether they were going to live or die, each holding spears and sabers, waving banners and beating drums, walked out of the cavern. They shouted at the Pilgrim, "You beating-resistant little macaque, you've come again!"
What the Pilgrim detested most were those two words, "macaque." Gritting his teeth in fury, he raised his iron rod and struck.
The three demon kings directed the little demons to run a circular formation, enclosing the Pilgrim in the center.
Over there, the Four Wood Animal Stars each brandished their weapons and said, "Wretched beasts! Do not move your hands!"
When those three demon kings saw those four stars, they naturally felt afraid and all said, "This is bad, this is bad! They have sought out helpers for subduing us. Little ones, each save your own life and flee!"
Only the sounds of *huhu houhou* and *chuanchuans hehehe* could be heard as all the little demons revealed their true forms. They turned out to be mountain cattle spirits, water cattle spirits, and yellow cattle spirits, running amok all over the mountain.
Those three demon kings also revealed their original forms, lowered their hands, and still had their four hooves. Just like iron cannons, they bolted straight toward the northeast.
This Great Sage, leading Jingmuhan and Jiaomujiao, pursued them urgently and closely, not letting up in the slightest.
Only Doumuxie and Kuimulang stayed within the east mountain recess, on the mountain peaks, in the mountain ravines, and among the mountain valleys, clearing away and cleaning up all the cattle spirits, whether beaten to death or captured alive. Then they headed into Xuanying Cave to untie Tang Monk, Bajie, and Wujing.
Wujing recognized that they were the two stars, and together with the others, bowed in gratitude. He therefore asked, "How did the two of you arrive here to save us?"
The two stars said, "We were dispatched by the Jade Emperor to receive an imperial decree and come here to subdue the monsters and save you."
Tang Monk shed tears again and said, "How is it that my disciple Wukong is not seen coming in?"
The two stars said, "Those three old monsters are three rhinoceroses. When they saw us, each thinking of saving their own life, they fled toward the northeast in the *gen* direction. The Great Sage Sun led Jingmuhan and Jiaomujiao in pursuit. We two stars swept away the crowd of cattle down to this place, and specially came to release the Holy Monk."
Tang Monk once again prostrated himself in thanks, and bowed again toward the sky.
Bajie helped him up and said, "Master, too much ceremony implies deceit; you don't need to keep bowing. As for the four star officials, on the one hand it was the Jade Emperor's imperial decree, and on the other it was Senior Brother's personal favor. Now that the myriad fiends have been swept away, we still don't know how the old monsters will be subdued. Let us gather some soft and valuable goods, overturn this cavern to cut off its roots, and return to the temple to wait for Senior Brother."
Kuimulang said, "Marshal Tianpeng speaks reasonably. You and the Curtain-Lifting General protect your master back to the temple to rest, while we go back to the *gen* direction to meet the enemy."
Bajie said, "Precisely, precisely. The two of you go and coordinate the capture; they must be completely exterminated before it is proper to return to report the decree."
The two star officials immediately set off in pursuit.
Bajie and Wujing searched out a *shi* of soft treasures from inside his cavern—there were numerous corals, agates, pearls, ambers, *ju* stones, precious items, fine jades, and fine gold—and carried them outside. They invited Master to sit on a mountain cliff, and then went back inside to set a fire, burning the entire cavern into ashes. Only then did they lead Tang Monk to find the path back to the Ciyun Temple in Jinping.
Just as the scriptures say:
"When misfortune reaches its extreme, fortune is born anew; in times of auspiciousness, running into peril truly does happen."
"The love of admiring festive lanterns disrupts the Zen mind; the joy of strolling through beautiful sights makes the Daoist heart drift away."
"The Great Elixir from ancient times is suited for long preservation; once the original is lost, in the end one suffers a deficit."
"Keep it tightly closed and firmly tethered, do not leave it idle; a moment of slackness reveals discrepancies."
Let us temporarily not speak of the three companions returning safely to the temple. Instead, we tell of the two star officials Doumuxie and Kuimulang riding the clouds straight toward the northeast *gen* direction to pursue the monsters.
The two of them searched and looked in mid-air, but could not see them. They went all the way to the Western Ocean, and from afar saw the Great Sage Sun shouting out on the sea.
The two of them pressed down the cloud heads and said, "Great Sage, where have the monsters gone?"
The Pilgrim said angrily, "Why didn't you two come to pursue and subdue them? At this time you come out with such thoughtless questions!"
Doumuxie said, "I saw the Great Sage fighting the demons alongside the Jing and Jiao stars, and reckoned they would surely be captured. The two of us then swept away the myriad fiends, entered Xuanying Cave to rescue your master and junior fellow apprentice, searched the mountain, burned the cavern, entrusted your master to your two younger brothers, and led them back to Ciyun Temple in the prefecture. We hadn't seen the carriage return for a long time, which is why we pursued you all the way here."
Hearing this, the Pilgrim only then smiled happily and thanked them, saying, "In that case, you have merit; I've troubled you greatly, troubled you greatly. But those three demons were driven by me to this place, and they dove straight down into the sea. Jing and Jiao stars were closely pursuing and capturing them, leaving old Sun to block them on the shore. Since you two have come, stay on the shore to intercept them, and let old Sun go again as well."
What a Great Sage! Brandishing his rod and twisting incantations, he parted the water's path and went straight into the depths of the billows. There he saw the three demons locked in a life-or-death, bitter struggle underneath the water with Jingmuhan and Jiaomujiao.
He leaped close and shouted, "Old Sun has arrived!"
Those demons, holding off the two star officials and caught off guard while in the midst of peril, suddenly heard the Pilgrim shouting. Fearing for their remaining lives, they whipped their heads around and flew at full speed toward the heart of the sea.
Originally, the horns on the heads of these monsters were extremely adept at parting water. One could only hear the sounds of *huahua huahua* as they plowed open a clear path.
Right behind them, the two star officials together with the Great Sage pursued them with all their might.
Now then, within the West Sea there was a sea-exploring *yasha* and a sea-patrolling armored soldier who saw from afar the rhinoceroses splitting the water's current, and also recognized the Great Sage Sun and the two heavenly stars. They hurried to the Crystal Palace and anxiously reported to the Dragon King, "Great King, there are three rhinoceroses being pursued by the Great Sage Equaling Heaven and the two heavenly stars!"
Upon hearing this, the Old Dragon King Ao Shun immediately called for Prince Mo'ang: "Quickly muster the water troops! It must be that the rhinoceros spirits Bihan, Bushu, and Bichen provoked Pilgrim Sun. Now that they have reached the sea, quickly draw your blades and assist."
Receiving the order, Ao Mo'ang busily mustered the troops. In an instant, turtles, soft-shelled turtles, marsh turtles, alligators, various kinds of fish, along with shrimp soldiers and crab generals, each holding spears and sabers, shouted in unison and leaped out of the Crystal Palace to block the rhinoceros spirits.
The rhinoceros spirits could not advance, and when they hurriedly retreated, there were the Jing and Jiao stars along with the Great Sage blocking their way. Panicking at losing their pack, each fled for their lives and scattered in all directions. Bichen was soon surrounded by the troops led by the Old Dragon King.
Seeing this, the Great Sage rejoiced and called out, "Hold up, hold up! Catch them alive, we don't want dead ones!"
Obeying the order, Mo'ang swarmed forward, overturned Bichen onto the ground, pierced his nose with an iron hook, tied his hooves together, and hogtied him.
The Old Dragon King again transmitted an order, instructing them to divide their troops to pursue those two and assist the two star officials in capturing them.
Immediately, the Young Dragon King led the masses forward and saw Jingmuhan in his original form, pinning down Bihan and chewing on him with big and small bites.
Mo'ang cried out loudly, "Jing Constellation, Jing Constellation! Do not bite him to death! The Great Sage Sun wants him alive, not dead!"
He shouted several times in a row, but his neck had already been bitten through by him.
Mo Ang gave orders to the shrimp soldiers and crab troops to carry the dead rhinoceros back to the Crystal Palace, then pressed forward with Jingmu Han in pursuit. They saw Jiaomu Jiao driving the Bishu'er fiend back in headlong flight, only to run straight into Jingmu Han's path. Mo Ang marshaled the turtles, terrapins, soft-shelled turtles, and alligators, spreading out a dustpan formation to surround him. The monster could only cry, "Spare my life, spare my life." Jingmu Han stepped forward, grabbed him by the ear, seized his blade, and said, "I won't kill you, I won't kill you—I'll take you to be dealt with by Great Sage Sun."
Thereupon they turned their weapons and returned to outside the Crystal Palace, reporting, "We have brought them all." When the Great Sage saw one with a severed head, bloody, lying on the ground, and another held by the ear by Jingmu Han, pushed to kneel on the ground, he stepped closer and examined it carefully, saying, "This head was not cut by a weapon." Mo Ang laughed and said, "If I had not shouted so urgently, even his body would have been eaten by Officer Jing." The Great Sage said, "Since that is so, so be it. Fetch a saw and saw off his two horns, then skin him and bring the hide. The rhinoceros meat shall remain for the Dragon King and his worthy son to enjoy." He also had the Pichen'er's nose pierced and ordered Jiaomu Jiao to lead him; the Pishu'er likewise had his nose pierced and ordered Jingmu Han to lead him: "Take them to Jinping
