The Wanli Restoration

The year is 1572. Forty-seven years remain until the Ming army's catastrophic defeat at Sarhu, and seventy-two years before the Central Plains fall and the dynasty collapses entirely. The once-glorious Ming Empire has already passed its zenith, rotting from within with bureaucratic corruption, a broken military system, empty state coffers, and a cascade of wrongful imprisonments. Beyond its borders, the northern steppes bristle with Tatar raids, the southeastern coast is harried by Japanese pirates, and the Jurchen tribes in the northeast are quietly consolidating their power. Into this precarious world descends a soul from the future, awakening as Crown Prince Zhu Yijun. Upon the death of the Longqing Emperor, the seemingly harmonious capital seethes with carefully orchestrated conspiracies and drawn blades. Vice Grand Secretary Zhang Juzheng and Senior Grand Secretary Gao Gong engage in a covert war for supremacy, while Gao Gong and the powerful eunuch Feng Bao vie for mutual annihilation. Caught in the crossfire of contending political factions both within and beyond the palace walls, how will the young prince navigate this deadly game of thrones? I am Zhu Yijun, Emperor of the Great Ming—and in this life, I shall prop up the crumbling edifice of the Zhu dynasty, sweep away the decadence of ages, and forge a new destiny for China.
