Tokyo's occult-specialist detective, Inugami, navigates a twilight realm where supernatural anomalies lurk just beyond ordinary perception. But a routine summons to a remote, insular village pulls him far deeper into that hidden world than expected. There, he finds Dorotabo—a forlorn, unearthly boy branded with the nickname of a yokai that haunts muddy rice paddies. Bereft of parents and cloaked in a repulsive odor that invites scorn from every quarter, the child endures a lonely existence on the fringes of a suspicious community. Inugami, however, perceives what the villagers refuse to see. The boy's unsettling demeanor is more than mere oddity; it is a veil for something profoundly monstrous. That truth crystallizes when the two unite to confront a savage entity preying on local herds. Their investigation peels back the mundane facade of the countryside, revealing a struggle against inhuman forces—and Dorotabo's own strange, eerie physiology becomes an unexpected asset in the hunt. Recognizing both the boy's desperate plight and his latent potential, Inugami resolves to mentor him. He will train this mistreated outcast to stand against the secret beasts that infest the world, harnessing the very uncanny powers that course through Dorotabo's own flesh—powers that may prove to be either his salvation or his damnation.
