Neko Tantei

This anthology gathers a remarkable selection of entries submitted to the prestigious Afternoon Four Seasons Awards between 1987 and 2000, offering a rare glimpse into the fledgling efforts of artists who would later ascend to the highest echelons of the manga industry. Assembled from the contest's storied archives, these works capture a pivotal era in the medium's evolution, showcasing the raw, unpolished talent that first caught the eyes of veteran judges long before fame and acclaim redefined their creators' careers. Within these pages lie the embryonic sparks of legendary storytelling—early drafts, bold experimental one-shots, and narrative concepts that would eventually crystallize into iconic series. Each piece radiates the restless ambition and unfiltered creativity of young visionaries finding their voice, navigating the rigorous demands of professional-grade drafting while pushing against the boundaries of conventional genre tropes. The collection does more than simply document historical submissions; it traces the arc of artistic development itself, illuminating the formative struggles and breakthrough moments that shaped a generation of master storytellers. Far more than a nostalgic tribute, this compilation stands as an essential testament to the enduring power of fresh perspective, preserving the vibrant, unvarnished beginnings of some of manga's most influential figures.
