Petals of Reincarnation

Senji Touya is a young man consumed by an obsessive, almost desperate pursuit of greatness. Convinced that talent is a tangible quality waiting to be unearthed, he hurls himself relentlessly into an endless gauntlet of disciplines—kendo, dance, swimming, basketball, soccer, chess—searching for the one field where his efforts will finally crystallize into something extraordinary. Yet no matter how fiercely he trains or how many hours he sacrifices, every endeavor ends in the same quiet, crushing disappointment: he is perpetually competent, but never exceptional. The world around him seems populated by individuals who possess an effortless, intangible spark, a natural brilliance that remains stubbornly just beyond his grasp, leaving him to wonder if some people are simply born with what he will never have. That simmering frustration reaches a breaking point when Haito, a reclusive classmate who has been absent from school for a prolonged stretch, suddenly reappears without warning. Touya has long regarded her as the perfect embodiment of innate talent—someone who undeniably "has it." But as he observes her enigmatic return, he inadvertently stumbles upon a truth that shatters his entire worldview. Haito is no mere prodigy; she is a "Returner," a rare individual who has awakened to and forcibly reclaimed the accumulated skills and aptitudes from her own past life. This revelation forces Touya to confront a chilling new reality: the gulf between himself and the truly gifted is not a matter of luck or hard work, but a secret, supernatural inheritance. As he is drawn deeper into the hidden world of the Returners, he must question whether his relentless quest for talent will lead to his salvation—or his ruin.
