Rice Shoulder

At eighteen years old and carrying 202 pounds on her frame, Okome Akino is no ordinary high school girl. Her very name—a playful nod to the autumn rice harvest—hints at a warmth and groundedness that belies her formidable physical presence. Yet beneath that gentle exterior lies an unexpected competitive fire, one that erupts when she steps into the ring for a local sumo exhibition. Against a male amateur fighter twice her experience, Okome does not merely compete; she dominates, winning by such a decisive landslide that the crowd falls into stunned silence. That victory catches the eye of Akane, a sharp-eyed trainer with a keen instinct for raw talent. Rather than a future in the sumo dohyo, Akane envisions something else for the heavy-footed teenager: the squared circle of women's professional boxing. With little persuasion, Okome finds herself trading the ceremonial salt toss for the rhythmic thump of leather gloves against heavy bags. Now, as she navigates a sport that demands agility, precision, and ruthless conditioning, she must reconcile her natural heft with the lightning footwork and sharp reflexes that boxing requires. Under Akane's watchful guidance, Okome begins a grueling transformation—not just of body, but of identity—as she steps into a ring where her size is both a weapon and a target, and where every punch thrown is a declaration that she belongs.
