Doc ni Makasero

In the hallways and classrooms of an unremarkable high school, an extraordinary gallery of oddities unfolds. This collection of loosely interwoven vignettes peers into the lives of students who don't quite fit the mold, navigating adolescence with peculiar grace and unsettling honesty. At the center of these tales stand two contrasting figures: Hayashi, whose aloof demeanor masks a startling directness, and Nikaidou, a brooding presence whose grim, downcast persona casts a shadow over every interaction. Through their orbits, the mundane becomes bizarre, and the bizarre becomes achingly human. Whether chronicling the awkward pursuit of friendship, the quiet obsession of an artist, or the chaos of a desperate sprint through school corridors, each story captures a distinct shade of teenage isolation and connection. The narrative shifts perspective with ease, zooming in on class-wide tensions, the simmering dread of a school trip, and the silent, often hilarious, judgments passed in the space between desks. Told with deadpan wit and a keen eye for the absurd, this celebrated work earned the Short Work category prize at the 24th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize and the New Face Award from the 23rd Japan Media Arts Festival in 2020, solidifying its place as a modern masterwork of quiet, character-driven storytelling.
