The Build Up

Ma-Ru Kang leads a thoroughly average existence, drifting through school with no real drive or distinguishing talent. That mundane routine shatters when his father coerces him into watching a professional soccer broadcast on television. Against all expectations, the match captivates him, unleashing a latent passion that rapidly swells into an all-encompassing obsession. Suddenly, the world looks different through the lens of a football pitch, and Ma-Ru commits himself to an audacious new purpose: evolving from a nameless nobody into a brilliant, accomplished player who commands the field. Yet, his path is riddled with more than just technical deficiencies. Within the unforgiving social hierarchy of his high school, Ma-Ru is already infamous, branded with the damning title of the "King of the Losers." This stigma clings to him like a curse, inviting ridicule from classmates and sowing doubt among anyone who might have taken him seriously. His every attempt to train and improve is shadowed by the weight of that mockery, forcing him to grapple with external scorn and his own creeping insecurities. Can he shatter the chains of his past reputation, convince his peers—and himself—that he is capable of more, and navigate the grueling journey toward athletic excellence? The odds are stacked against him, but on the soccer field, every underdog has a chance to score a winning goal.
