The Top Scholar

A poor farmer’s boy rises from the fields to claim the empire’s highest scholarly honor—but the throne sits empty, for the emperor spends his days and nights indulging in the notorious Leopard Pavilion. In the sovereign’s absence, the newly crowned Number One Scholar must wield his influence through a court rife with danger and ambition. One by one, history’s most legendary figures cross his path and owe him their fates: Tang Yin proclaims him a deliverer; Wang Shouren credits him with evading a deadly ambush by the Embroidered Uniform Guard; Yang Shen bitterly laments that this man stole both his coveted title and his betrothed; Yan Song learns the true art of statecraft from his righteous godfather; and Prince Zhu Shou simply begs his godfather for rescue—because he cannot swim. This is the chronicle of the scholar who reshaped an era, not through imperial decree, but by saving the very men who would define it.
