At twenty-nine, Enkai is hardly the picture of ambition. A creature of idle habits and easy vices, he spends his days drifting from one gambling den to the next, chasing luck that rarely favors him. When his purse runs dry—as it inevitably does—he stumbles upon a commission that promises quick coin: a request to lift the infamous curse of Sesshoseki, the Killing Stone. Despite possessing neither the spiritual aptitude nor the resolve such a task demands, desperation overrides prudence, and Enkai accepts the job with a gambler's careless shrug. The stone's dark legend is no secret. It is said to hold the vengeful remnants of Tamamo-mae, the dazzling courtesan who once captivated Emperor Toba—and who, in truth, was a monstrous nine-tailed fox of immense cunning. Exterminated and sealed within the volcanic rock, her fury has festered for centuries, poisoning the land around it. Against all expectation, Enkai's bumbling attempt at exorcism seems to s쳮d; the oppressive miasma lifts, and he allows himself a relieved sigh, certain his luck has finally turned. But his victory is short-lived. In the very moment he believes the curse broken, a figure materializes before him—a young man of startling beauty, crowned with nine flowing tails and eyes that burn with ancient foxfire. He introduces himself as Tamaarashi, and his sudden, enigmatic arrival shatters Enkai's fragile peace. Whatever bargain Enkai thought he had struck with fate is only just beginning, and this dazzling, dangerous spirit promises to drag the lazy gambler into a world far beyond the roll of a die.
