Paprika: The dream-child

For high schooler Youji Takashima, life has always revolved around his older sister, Senko. At twenty-six, she is the anchor of his world—a fact he grapples with daily, given his deep-seated, complicated attachment to her. Their shared household is his sanctuary, built on the quiet intimacy of sibling dependence. That fragile stability shatters when Senko reintroduces Ren Akishima, an old college friend, into her life. From their very first awkward encounter, Youji feels an immediate, visceral distrust toward the man. Convinced that Ren’s intentions are blatantly romantic and aimed at claiming his sister’s hand, Youji’s wariness curdles into open resentment, threatening the equilibrium of their home. But Senko harbors a revelation that will dismantle Youji's world entirely. She announces her imminent departure for New York, a career-driven leap designed to secure her professional future—and she has already arranged for Youji to remain behind, not alone, but under the reluctant care of Ren Akishima. For Youji, this is the ultimate betrayal: forced cohabitation with the very man he suspects is trying to steal his sister, coupled with the unbearable sting of her abandonment. Trapped between his fierce loyalty and the crumbling reality of his sister’s choices, Youji finds his carefully guarded life upended, leaving him to confront a future he never wanted, with a guardian he never asked for.
