After being knocked awake by a punch, Morin finds himself a prisoner of war. He initially assumes this world resembles the eve of World War I—only to realize the situation is far worse than he imagined. Why is he, an imperial soldier, now fighting alongside volunteers from the International Brigade? The sword-and-shield assault troops clad like iron cans, diesel-magitek hybrid armored knights, and attached battle mages all tell Morin that this world is deeply, fundamentally wrong. But right now, his only concern is surviving a war that claims to be "the war to end all wars."
