This Emperor Really Doesn't Do His Job

On the nineteenth day of the first month in the first year of the Wanli reign, Emperor Zhu Yijun of the Great Ming slowly sized up the iron triangle standing before him. His first ally bore a rather kindly countenance—she was none other than the Empress Dowager of the Great Ming. His second ally was merely a eunuch, whose duty was to kowtow. His third ally was a powerful minister of state, one whose domineering aura could not be concealed. At last, every gaze turned to the Emperor himself, and all asked what role he was meant to play. Weighing his own identity, the Emperor declared: "I am the great Emperor who neglects his proper duties."
