There, Beneath the Water

Deep beneath the still waters of the town's lake, legend speaks of a "mermaid"—a creature said to prey upon human flesh. Locals whisper of her hunger, of the danger sleeping just below the surface, and of the shadowed boundary between the town above and the darkness below. Yet the mermaid has never truly been confined to her watery depths. Even now, she drifts through the town in search of companions, her presence stirring the restless hearts of those who cross her path. What began as an old folktale quietly bleeds into everyday life, blurring the line between rumor and reality, between the living and the thing that dwells beneath the water. A modern fable told with quiet, unsettling grace, this is the story of foolish girls who cannot live in clean water—souls too tangled in their own longings to float untroubled on the surface, drawn instead toward the depths where someone, or something, has been waiting all along.
