Hataraki Man

Hataraki Man presents a collection of one-shot narratives centered on the demanding world of magazine publishing, viewed through the eyes of Hiroko Matsukata. As a twenty-eight-year-old single editor for the weekly publication JIDAI, she navigates an intensely stressful career while frequently clashing with Tanaka Kunio, an inexperienced junior editor whose unapologetic attitude toward his own errors only compounds her professional burdens. Colleagues often perceive Hiroko as masculine due to her uncompromising dedication and serious demeanor, traits that define her existence both in and out of the office. Her personal life reflects this singular devotion to work, characterized by excessive smoking, relentless overwork, and a complete absence of romantic or sexual relationships. However, when deadlines loom and stories must be completed, Hiroko undergoes a remarkable psychological and physiological transformation known as "Working Man" mode. During these periods of intense focus, her blood testosterone levels surge, enabling her to operate at triple her normal speed while all thoughts of basic human necessities and personal concerns vanish entirely. This unique state allows her to transcend ordinary limitations, embodying the ultimate professional who sacrifices everything else in pursuit of journalistic excellence within the high-pressure environment of weekly magazine editing.
