Kuri-chan

Kuri-chan is a classic yonkoma manga series created by Susumu Nemoto, serialized in the evening edition of the Asahi Shimbun newspaper from October 1, 1951, to March 31, 1965. The story centers on a young boy whose real name is Ken, though he is universally known by his affectionate nickname. Nemoto based the protagonist directly on his own eldest son, born in 1948, giving the character a deeply personal origin. The nickname "Kuri-chan" derives from the boy's naturally curly hair, which is described in Japanese as "kuri kuri," reflecting his most endearing physical trait. What sets this manga apart from its contemporaries is its highly distinctive storytelling approach. Rather than relying on traditional dialogue or narrative text, the series conveys its story almost exclusively through visual imagery and onomatopoeia. This unique reliance on expressive sounds and illustrations rather than written words has led critics and historians to classify the work as a pantomime comic.
