Gassou

Set against the turbulent backdrop of Japan’s transformative final days under the Tokugawa Shogunate, Gassou chronicles the harrowing experiences of a group of young men bound by loyalty and desperation. As the old feudal order collapses around them, these individuals find themselves swept into the closing chapter of an era defined by samurai honor and shifting allegiances. The nation stands on the precipice of radical change, and those who served the former regime must now navigate a world that no longer has a place for them. These young warriors are members of the Shougitai, a fierce faction composed of former retainers loyal to the Tokugawa clan. Refusing to quietly accept the dawn of a new political reality, they take up arms in staunch opposition to the newly established Meiji government. Their struggle is not merely a military campaign but a deeply personal battle fought to preserve their identity, their loyalties, and the fading legacy of their fallen lords. Through its focused historical lens, the manga explores the intense conflict and profound sacrifices made by those who chose resistance over submission. It captures the raw determination of young fighters standing defiantly against the inevitable tide of modernization, offering a poignant look at the human cost of revolution and the enduring spirit of those left behind by history.
