Narcissu

Shortly after his twentieth birthday, an unnamed young man receives a devastating diagnosis of lung carcinoma. He is admitted to a hospice facility in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture, where he crosses paths with Setsumi, a terminally ill woman a few years his senior. Despite their differing ages, the two quickly discover a shared conviction: neither is willing to spend their final days confined to a hospital bed or fading away quietly among grieving relatives at home. Bound by this mutual resolve, they make the bold decision to escape together. Taking possession of the protagonist's father's silver Honda Integra, the pair embarks on an impromptu road trip westward across Japan. As they navigate countless highways and traverse multiple prefectures, they travel without a clear destination in mind, simply seeking freedom from their grim reality. Eventually, through quiet conversation and shared purpose, they settle on a goal—the blooming narcissus fields of southern Awaji Island. Though chosen somewhat arbitrarily, this distant floral landscape becomes their collective sanctuary, transforming a desperate flight into a poignant journey toward meaning in the face of inevitable mortality.
