The Apothecary Diaries

In the eastern reaches of the world lies a vast empire governed by an emperor, whose numerous consorts and attendants reside within a grand, secluded complex known as the rear palace. Maomao, a seemingly unremarkable young woman raised in a quiet provincial town by her apothecary father, never expected to have any connection to this opulent world. However, her life is abruptly upended when she is kidnapped and sold into servitude within the palace walls. Beneath her ordinary appearance, Maomao possesses a brilliant intellect, razor-sharp wit, and profound expertise in medicine and pharmacology. She intends to keep these talents hidden to ensure a peaceful existence, but her carefully constructed facade crumbles upon meeting Jinshi, the head eunuch. As astute and perceptive as Maomao herself, Jinshi quickly recognizes her true capabilities and refuses to let her fade into obscurity. Instead of allowing her to remain a lowly servant, Jinshi promotes Maomao to the position of lady-in-waiting for the Emperor’s most favored consort. Her appointment, however, comes with a perilous duty: she is tasked with tasting the consort's meals to detect any trace of poison. Thrust into a dangerous web of court intrigue, Maomao must rely on her extraordinary knowledge to survive the treacherous politics of the rear palace.
