Sky Hawk

Following the fall of the old regime during the Boshin War of 1868, two defeated samurai named Hikosaburo and Manzo are exiled from Japan as the new Meiji government consolidates power. Seeking a new life far from their homeland, they eventually settle within Crow territory in North America. During a routine hunting expedition, Hikosaburo discovers a young Native American woman named Running Deer, who has just given birth while hiding in the brush. She reveals that she recently escaped from white traders who had purchased her, but her captors are already tracking her down to reclaim their property. The violent confrontation with the deceitful traders is interrupted by the arrival of Crazy Horse, chief of the Oglala Lakota, who saves them from certain death. This rescue sparks a profound bond between the former samurai and the Native warriors, rooted in deep mutual respect for each other's cultures. Embracing their new lives, Hikosaburo and Manzo are given the names Sky Hawk and Winds Wolf, choosing to fight alongside their adopted brothers against the encroaching invaders. Through this compelling narrative, Jiro Taniguchi delivers a historically grounded portrayal of the Indian Wars, building toward the legendary clash at Little Bighorn.
