Hajime Algorithm

Following a lecture in his hometown of Yonezawashima, elderly mathematician Uchida Yutaka revisits his alma mater and encounters Sekiguchi Hajime, a fifth-grade student with an extraordinary passion for numbers. Unlike typical children his age, Hajime actively attempts to decode the complexities of reality through self-derived equations, seeking mathematical explanations for everything around him. From the drifting patterns of clouds and the fractal branching of trees to the intricate veins of a dragonfly’s wing, he perceives hidden structures where others see only chaos. Hajime’s analytical curiosity extends beyond natural phenomena into the fabric of daily life, as he applies numerical logic to mundane occurrences like license plate sequences and even the selection of class representatives. His relentless drive to articulate the unknown through mathematics forms the emotional and intellectual core of the narrative, bridging the gap between abstract theory and tangible experience. Through this intergenerational connection between a seasoned scholar and a gifted child, the story illustrates how mathematical thinking can transform one's perception of reality. Readers are invited to witness this unique worldview, potentially fostering a deeper appreciation for mathematics and permanently altering how they observe the world around them.
