The World Is Dancing

In fourteenth-century Japan, twelve-year-old Oniyasha travels the country as a performer with a nomadic theater troupe. Though he was born into a life of acting and dance, the young boy struggles to grasp the deeper purpose behind his craft. He constantly questions the rigid rules of movement, wondering why specific steps must be taken with one foot rather than another, what truly separates a masterful performance from a poor one, and why people feel compelled to dance in the first place. To him, the entire art form feels entirely arbitrary and devoid of meaning. Everything changes following an unexpected encounter inside a dilapidated shack. This chance meeting sets Oniyasha on a transformative path that will ultimately lead him to revolutionize theatrical expression and leave a lasting imprint on Japanese culture for centuries to come. Serving as a fictionalized account of the early years of Zeami Motokiyo—the historical founder of modern Noh theater, recognized as the world's oldest surviving dramatic art—this coming-of-age story follows a visionary artist far ahead of his time. Set against the backdrop of one of Japan's most culturally and socially dynamic eras, the narrative vividly captures the journey of a young performer searching for meaning and forever altering the artistic landscape.
