Hakuouki

Adapted from the renowned otome game, this manga presents artist Ninomiya Sachi’s distinctive interpretation of Yukimura Chizuru’s journey through the turbulent Bakumatsu period. Upon traveling from Edo to Kyoto in search of her missing father, Chizuru unexpectedly encounters the Shinsengumi, an elite group of warriors who conceal a dark and terrible secret beneath their disciplined exterior. Her quest for familial truth becomes inextricably linked with their hidden struggles, drawing her into a world of political intrigue and supernatural danger that challenges everything she understands about loyalty and survival. Unlike other adaptations of the Hakuouki narrative, this series employs a unique non-linear storytelling structure that immediately immerses readers in high-stakes action. The story opens dramatically at the pivotal Ikedaya Incident before weaving backward through flashbacks to reveal the events leading to that chaotic night. This unconventional chronological approach offers a fresh perspective on Chizuru’s entanglement with the Shinsengumi, emphasizing the weight of destiny and the fragmented nature of memory as she pieces together both her father’s disappearance and the true nature of the warriors protecting her.
