Osu!! Karate-bu

Osu!! Karate-bu begins as a lighthearted satire of Japan’s teenage delinquent subculture, narrated by Tadashi Matsushita, a second-year student at Kangokou High School. Alongside his best friend Takaki Saitou, Tadashi endures relentless bullying from the school’s numerous thugs. Exhausted by their constant victimization, the two decide to join the school’s notorious Karate Club. Throughout Osaka’s youth gangs, the club is infamous for forging the city’s most ruthless fighters while maintaining the outward appearance of a legitimate sports organization. However, upon joining, Tadashi and Saitou discover that the abuse only intensifies at the hands of the senior members. As the narrative progresses, both friends steadily develop into formidable combatants. The manga undergoes a dramatic shift in tone and focus, with its roster of teenage fighters growing increasingly powerful and eventually unlocking superhuman ki abilities. This evolution places the series alongside legendary shōnen battle epics such as Yu Yu Hakusho, Dragon Ball, and Fist of the North Star. A massive success in its native Japan yet largely unknown internationally, Osu!! Karate-bu inspired a four-episode OVA released between 1990 and 1992, a live-action film in 1990, and a Super Famicom fighting game in 1994.
