Gekiga Baka-tachi!!

Gekiga Baka-tachi!! is a biographical manga that chronicles the birth of the gekiga movement during the 1950s. Set against the backdrop of Japan's rapidly evolving post-war publishing industry, the story follows a group of ambitious young artists determined to push the boundaries of traditional comic storytelling. Rather than adhering to the lighthearted conventions of mainstream manga, these creators sought to develop a more mature, cinematic, and dramatic art form tailored for older audiences. At the heart of this narrative are Takao Saito, Matsumoto Masahiko, and Yoshihiro Tatsumi—three passionate visionaries who dedicated themselves to forging an entirely new genre. The manga explores their creative struggles, personal ambitions, and collaborative efforts as they worked tirelessly to establish gekiga as a legitimate artistic medium. Through their shared dedication, they challenged the status quo of the era, laying the groundwork for a revolutionary style of graphic storytelling that would leave a lasting impact on the industry.
