At twenty-one, Nicoletta journeys to Rome seeking Olga, the mother who abandoned her years ago. She tracks her down at Casetta dell'Orso, an elegant little restaurant run by Olga's new husband and staffed entirely by charming, bespectacled older gentlemen. While the waiters greet Nicoletta with genuine warmth, Olga’s reaction is decidedly colder. Desperate to conceal her past from a husband who knows nothing of her children, Olga proposes a fragile arrangement: Nicoletta may live there and train as an apprentice, provided she poses as the daughter of a distant friend. Nicoletta quickly adapts to the restaurant's refined atmosphere, growing especially close to Claudio, the gentle headwaiter. Though divorced for years, Claudio still wears his wedding ring, hinting at a lingering sorrow that draws Nicoletta to him. As her affection for Claudio deepens into something complicated, she unexpectedly finds solace in conversations with Olga.
