Our Colors

Set against the backdrop of contemporary suburban Japan, *Our Colors* follows Sora Itoda, a sixteen-year-old aspiring painter whose perception of the world is colored by synesthesia. Experiencing reality in vibrant shades of blue and red driven by the emotional turbulence of adolescence, Sora longs to live openly as a gay high schooler in a society where such authenticity remains largely unacceptable. He navigates these pressures alongside Nao, his childhood confidant and best friend. Although everyone assumes they are a couple, Nao plays along for convenience; she understands his truth and the profound difficulty of living honestly within their conservative environment. Sora’s life shifts dramatically when he crosses paths with Mr. Amamiya, an older local coffee shop owner who lives proudly and unapologetically as an openly gay man. A meaningful mentorship and friendship quickly blossom between them after Sora comes out to him and agrees to paint a mural inside the cafe. As Mr. Amamiya offers invaluable guidance on embracing his identity, Sora begins to see a path forward. However, this newfound freedom comes with a cost. Mr. Amamiya has paid dearly for his own self-expression, and the sudden arrival of a figure from his past threatens to reveal the heavy, complex realities of living truthfully.
