Yokubou Shounen

Even when exploring the everyday lives of schoolboys and salarymen, Naono-sensei infuses her characters with a distinct magic that sets them apart. *Yokubou Shounen* is an anthology of five one-shots where only one ventures into pure fantasy, while the rest focus on beautifully flawed, ordinary people navigating complex emotions. The collection opens by introducing teacher Matsunae Suguru and his introspective student Shinobu, whose presence inadvertently stirs romantic confusion between two sweetly oblivious classmates, Hideya and Makoto. The subsequent stories deepen this emotional resonance, portraying relationships painted with doubt, misunderstandings, and richly drawn individuality. The anthology’s centerpiece, "Love Snatcher," offers a stunning departure into fantasy. After losing his job, half-Japanese Tanaka Tatsuaki drunkenly prays to the moon for escape, only to be summoned to a realm of shape-shifters. There, he is chosen as the bride of Tigure, the majestic lord of the tigers, and faces the shocking expectation of bearing children. The remaining tales return to grounded romance: in "Love and Reticence," a nearly silent ghostwriter named Kisa falls for a quiet diner and its handsome owner, who desires far more than just a loyal customer. Finally, "Drowning in Love" follows Yoshino Keiichi, whose life transforms when single father Kayumi Takamasa and his two children move in next door. As Keiichi steps into a nurturing role for the youngsters, his connection with their father evolves into something far more intricate.
