Twilight Out of Focus

Mao Tsuchiya is a dedicated film enthusiast who shares a dormitory room with Hisashi Otomo, a quiet and solitary second-year student. To maintain harmony in their shared living space, the two establish three firm agreements. Mao promises to keep Hisashi’s sexuality and his relationship with a boyfriend an absolute secret. In return, Hisashi swears he will never direct any romantic or physical interest toward Mao, and both commit to respecting each other's personal boundaries and private time. These carefully constructed rules are designed to guarantee a peaceful coexistence throughout their school year. However, the predictable structure they rely on soon begins to unravel. Life behind closed doors rarely follows a neat script, and the emotional complexities of their situation prove far more difficult to manage than either young man anticipated. As the boundaries between them start to blur, both Mao and Hisashi discover that certain feelings cannot be contained by simple promises, and reality is never as straightforward as the movies they admire.
