Kigurumi Guardians

Lily Hoshino, the acclaimed creator behind Mawaru Penguindrum, delivers a charmingly subversive reimagining of the magical girl genre with Kigurumi Guardians. For readers who ever imagined that classic transformation narratives could benefit from the addition of attractive older men clad in full-body mascot suits, this series provides an unexpectedly delightful answer. The story follows Hakka Sasakura, an ordinary student whose daily routine revolves around quietly admiring her school’s student body president. However, her predictable life is abruptly shattered when she returns home one afternoon to find an intruder waiting for her. This mysterious figure is no ordinary trespasser but rather a strange being resembling a man wearing an oversized animal costume who has inexplicably taken up residence in her house. Hakka soon learns that she has been specifically chosen to partner with this bizarre entity to defend Earth against hostile invaders crossing over from another dimension. As if the burden of saving the world were not overwhelming enough, the mechanics of their partnership come with a deeply unconventional catch: to successfully harness their power and fight off the interdimensional threat, Hakka is required to kiss her costumed companion. Thrust into a conflict she never anticipated, she must navigate this absurd yet dangerous new reality.
