Under Ground

Set against the gritty backdrop of 1980s Japan, Under Ground is a raw and electrifying reportage that plunges into the shadows of the illicit adult entertainment industry. The narrative follows a young man who finds himself drawn into this dangerous world under the direct tutelage of Tooru Muranishi, the infamous figure known as the "Emperor of Porn." Guided by Muranishi's relentless ambition, the protagonist is thrust into an environment where censorship laws are openly defied, and creators operate with a fierce conviction that the human body should be depicted without restriction or artificial concealment. This manga captures the untamed energy and unapologetic audacity of an era defined by its rebellion against societal norms. As the young man navigates the volatile underground market, he witnesses firsthand the profound extremes of human nature—exposed in all its vulnerability, greed, and desire. Far from a simple historical account, the story delivers a numbingly exciting exploration of individuals who risk everything for their craft, driven by an unstoppable vitality. Through the lens of Muranishi’s revolutionary approach to filmmaking, the series offers a visceral look at the people who built an empire in the dark, revealing the stark realities hidden beneath the surface of a rapidly changing society.
