Kentarou is a talented shogi player whose former mentor once taught him to metaphorically dive into the eighty-one squares of the traditional Japanese chessboard. This profound lesson in total immersion earned him the distinctive nickname "81 Diver," reflecting his deep, almost instinctual connection to the game. Despite his exceptional skill and unwavering dedication, Kentarou faced a crushing setback when he failed to secure a place in the highly competitive professional shogi league, leaving his ultimate ambitions unfulfilled. Refusing to abandon the board that defines his life, Kentarou adapts his path and finds an unconventional way to survive through his craft. Rather than pursuing sanctioned tournaments, he turns to the gritty, high-stakes world of amateur shogi clubs, where matches are played for money rather than prestige. By gambling on his abilities in these underground settings, he manages to earn a living entirely through the game he loves. His journey transforms from a straightforward pursuit of professional glory into a relentless struggle for survival, pitting his formidable talent against desperate opponents in a shadow economy built around Japan's most revered strategy game.
