Hana Kuso

When life feels like it has taken a turn for the worse, sometimes all one can do is laugh through the mess. In Japanese culture, the phrase "hanakuso"—literally translating to "nose snot"—is used as a colorful and colloquial substitute for expressing that things are going terribly wrong. This animated short embraces that sentiment, offering audiences a refreshing dose of hope and giggles in the face of everyday absurdity. Produced as a 2022 graduate work from the Department of Animation at the Tokyo University of the Arts, Graduate School of Film and New Media, the film channels the distinct creative energy of its academic origins. It serves as a lighthearted reminder that even when circumstances seem undeniably crappy, there is always room for humor and optimism.
