No Roses Without Thorns: My Life As a Shojo Manga Assistant

During the 1970s, Japan experienced a golden age of shojo manga, captivating readers with pages filled with roses, sparkles, and sweeping romance. Yet behind the glamorous facade of the country's most popular girls' comics lay an ink-stained battlefield where creators and their teams worked tirelessly to bring these stories to life. This autobiographical manga offers a rare glimpse into that demanding world through the eyes of Nami Sasou, who stepped into the industry not as a seasoned professional, but as a high school student serving as an assistant to Suzue Miuchi, the legendary creator of the massively successful Glass Mask. Rather than presenting a polished or idealized version of the creative process, Sasou shares the decidedly unglamorous realities of working on beloved romance manga. The narrative explores the stark contrast between the dreamy worlds drawn on paper and the grueling, everyday challenges faced by those producing them. Told entirely from a distinctly shojo perspective, this manga about making manga delivers an honest, firsthand account of what it truly meant to assist in crafting the iconic pages that defined an era of Japanese girls' comics.
