Baccano! from the 1700s

In 1705, the quiet provincial city of Lotto Valentino on the Italian peninsula is gripped by a sudden wave of brutal murders. The culprit, known only as the Mask Maker, wears a pristine white mask and leaves an identical one upon each victim. Anyone unfortunate enough to witness these crimes becomes the killer’s next target. Amid this terror, Huey Laforet, a young boy attending a secretive academy dedicated to alchemy, harbors a deep hatred for the world around him. His bleak existence shifts when his classmate, Monica Campanella, confesses her feelings for him, just as a new student named Elmer C. Albatross arrives in town. Meanwhile, Niki, a young girl enslaved by a local merchant, inadvertently witnesses one of the Mask Maker’s horrific acts. Drawn together by circumstance, these four youths are forced to confront both the masked murderer and a shadowy conspiracy seeking absolute control over the entire city. Their desperate struggle marks the violent beginning of a three-hundred-year conflict among immortals.
