Baby Boom

Baby Boom is a charming collection of interconnected stories centered around two recurring characters: a "bird"—a black-headed creature beneath a mask that serves as the author's imaginative alter ego—and a "chick." Together, either as a pair or alongside a lively group of friends, they immerse themselves in the quintessential activities of childhood. Their days are filled with carefree adventures, from playing with hoops and building blocks to swimming, folding paper, drawing, sharing snacks, constructing elaborate creations, digging in sandboxes, and joyfully splashing through puddles. Rendered using only two colors of felt-tip pens, artist Yokoyama preserves the spontaneous freshness of hand-drawn sketches throughout the manga. The apparent speed of his execution and the striking contrast of his chosen palette give each page a vibrant, energetic quality. These visual choices serve as a natural extension of the story’s spirit, perfectly mirroring and amplifying the infectious, frenzied joy shared by the bird, the chick, and their ever-enthusiastic playmates.
