Youkai Karuta

During the twilight of the Edo period, as the distant echoes of modernization begin to sweep across Japan, a young dreamer named Shion embarks on a life-changing journey. Traveling from the Netherlands to his mother’s homeland, he carries with him a singular, unwavering ambition: to encounter a genuine youkai. Driven by this lifelong fascination, Shion steps into a country caught between ancient tradition and an uncertain future, hoping that the land of his ancestors holds the supernatural wonders he has always imagined. His search is finally rewarded one fateful night beneath the shadow of an old bridge. There, glowing with a faint, ethereal light, stands a mysterious boy who appears to be the very spirit Shion has been seeking. However, this luminous figure is not a traditional monster of legend. Instead, he reveals himself to be a hanyo—a rare half-blood born of both human and youkai lineage. This unexpected meeting bridges two vastly different worlds, setting the stage for a story where the boundaries between humanity and the supernatural blur in a rapidly changing era.
