Kyon, a first-year student at Beijing High School, is forced by Haruhi Suzumiya—a beautiful girl who claims to have no interest in humans—to form a group called the SOS. Within the group, he encounters aliens, people from the future, and individuals with superpowers. When Haruhi Suzumiya nearly destroys the world, he manages to bring both her and himself back to reality. The male protagonist becomes "unfortunately" involved simply because he happens to sit in front of Suzumiya Haruhi. She establishes an unusual group at school—the SOS—and the unconventional campus story begins.
