Summary

In the quaint town of Zhongyuan, a young man named Chen Yan receives a mysterious letter and a bronze key from his recently deceased grandfather, beckoning him to return to their ancestral home on the 15th of July. As Chen Yan unlocks the sealed courtyard, which has been locked away for over twenty years, he is met with a multitude of Nuo masks that seem to watch him with an air of silence. The Chen family has been renowned Nuo mask masters for six generations, using their craft to help vengeful spirits find peace and to aid the living in repaying their debts to the spirit world. Chen Yan's grandfather leaves behind the key, not to force him into following in his footsteps, but to give him the freedom to choose his own path. As Chen Yan delves deeper into the world of Nuo masks, he discovers that the three main branches of the Nuo mask tradition - the Chen, Zheng, and Zhan families - had split apart a century ago, resulting in the fragmentation of the core red mask into three pieces. This event has led to a series of supernatural occurrences, including the appearance of ancient trees with human faces, poisonous insects, and vengeful spirits that had been sealed away for centuries. The descendants of the three families are forced to reunite and re-examine their traditions. Chen Yan, rather than questioning his own destiny as a Nuo mask master, begins to challenge the established rules and conventions of his family's craft, wondering if the spirits they have been helping are truly willing to be laid to rest. By giving the spirits the choice to move on, Chen Yan breaks a century-old tradition and sets in motion a new era of coexistence between the living and the dead. The people of Zhongyuan, each with their own unique profession and connection to the spirit world, learn to live in harmony with the Nuo masks and the spirits they represent. The masks, once seen as weapons, are revealed to be tools for calming fears and anxieties. As the people of the town come to terms with their own mortality and the weight of their responsibilities, they begin to share the burden of their craft, allowing the spirits to finally find peace. The Nuo noodles, a symbol of the town's traditions and craftsmanship, become a testament to the power of choice, freedom, and the human spirit's capacity to adapt and evolve.
