Savoring the Song Dynasty: Rebuilding the Rivers and Mountains

Set in the first year of the Shaosheng era (1094), the story follows Zhao Chen, a graduate student in Song dynasty history, whose soul unexpectedly transmigrates into the body of the newly enthroned, sixteen-year-old Emperor Zhezong of the Song dynasty, Zhao Xu. The original emperor was headstrong and misguided, falling prey to the slander of the New Policies faction and instigating brutal political purges that exiled loyal and capable ministers such as Su Shi and Su Zhe to the perilous malaria-ridden lands of Lingnan. The imperial court is bitterly divided, civil and military officials are alienated, intellectuals nationwide have lost faith, and the heartland of the Song empire is gripped by fear and instability. Meanwhile, the Khitan Liao dynasty in the north is sharpening its weapons and marching south, repeatedly breaching the border passes, while tens of thousands of armored cavalry from Western Xia in the northwest eye the Central Plains like a tiger waiting for its prey. Surrounded by these two formidable enemies, the survival of the Song dynasty hangs by a thread. Confronting this desperate crisis, Emperor Zhezong recalls renowned statesmen to his side, determined to reform the administration and restore the glory of the realm.
