Set in the same universe as Persona 3, Persona 4 unfolds in the rural town of Inaba beginning on April 11, 2011, fourteen months after the conclusion of the previous game. This timeline is reflected in details such as Chihiro now being a third-year student. The town has been plagued by mysterious murders that coincide with heavy fog following rainstorms. Concurrently, rumors circulate regarding the "Mayonaka TV," a channel said to broadcast only at midnight where viewers can supposedly see their other selves. After discussing a recent unsolved murder linked to the fog, the protagonist, Chie, and Yōsuke realize they have all witnessed the victim on this mysterious channel. The protagonist subsequently discovers that he can physically enter the television set during the midnight broadcast, revealing a gateway to an alternate world infested with Shadows. Upon fully entering this realm, the group encounters Teddie while disoriented and begins to suspect a direct link between Mayonaka TV and the local killings, theorizing that the victims were targeted through the broadcast. United by this discovery, they resolve to explore the hidden world within the television to solve the murders.
